Summary: Standardized classification of ocular trauma - Birmingham Eye Trauma Terminology (BETT), could be eventually the international language of mechanical injuries of the eye. This system of classification provides unambiguous definitions for eye trauma within a framework of a comprehensive system. It uses entire globe as the tissue of reference, and classifies both open- and closed-globe injuries according to four seperate variables: Type of injury, based on the mechanism of injury; grade of injury, defined by visual acuity in the injured eye at initial examination; pupil, defined as the presence or absence of a relative afferent pupillary defect and zone of injury, defined by the location of the eye-wall opening.
