| Summary: |
Purpose: To evaluate reasons of traumatic
cataract, methods of surgical treatment and early results.
Material and methods: We examined 34 eyes in 34 patients aged from 5 to
73 years (mean aged 37,5) - 7 women (21%) and 27 men (79%). Cataract after blunt trauma
was found in 15 patients (44%), after penetrating trauma without foreign body in 13
(38,5%) and after penetrating trauma with foreign body in 6 (17,5%).
Results: Mean period between blunt trauma and traumatic cataract
extraction was 7 years (from 2 days to 34 years), for patients after penetrating trauma
without foreign body - 3,5 years (from one day to 20 years) and after penetrating trauma
with foreign body - 2 days (from 1 to 4 days). Facoaspiration was performed in 19
patients (56%). Intraocular lens was implanted in 23 patients (68%), to the capsula in 14
(60,8%). In 80% patients additional procedures with vitrectomy were performed with
cataract extraction. Improvement of visual acuity after cataract extraction concerns 26
patients (76%): 12 (80%) after blunt trauma, 10 (77%) after penetrating without foreign
body and 4 (66%) patients with intraocular foreign body.
Conclusions: Traumatic cataract surgery, gives the chance for improvement
of visual acuity in eyes with or without intraocular implants. |
