| Summary: |
The incidence of
endophthalmitis, risk factors and responsible pathogens
were assessed in group of 3720 eyes that underwent clear
corneal cataract surgery. Endophthalmitis occurred in 14
eyes (0,37%). The average onset was 5,2 days (ranged
2-10 days) after phacoemulsication. Diabetes, neoplastic
disease, rheumatoid arthritis, patients’ noncompliance
were found to be the risk factors for endophthalmitis
after cataract surgery. Endophthalmitis occurred more
often in elderly (mean age 72,4 years). 9 of 14 cases
were culture-positive endophthalmitis with isolated and
specified pathogens. The risk of endophthalmitis
increases in cases with coexisting systemic diseases, at
older age, and in cases of patients’ noncompliance. |
