| Summary: |
An array of ocular
diseases result from (or are accompanied by)
neovascularization. They include, among others,
retinopathy of prematurity, diabetic retinopathy or
age-related macular degemneration. The process of
neovascularization is developing under condition of a
functional dominance of proangiogenic factors over
antiangiogenic ones. Vascular endothelial growth factor
(VEGF) is a key stimulator of angiogenesis, while a
recently discovered pigment epithelium-derived factor (PEDF)
appears to be a powerful endogenous inhibitor of
angiogenesis. This paper reviews recent „human”
experimental findings showing ocular levels/concentrations
of VEGF and PEDF in various ophthalmological diseases
occurring with neovascularization. Based on literature
experimental and clinical data, a possible diagnostic/prognostic
value of increased and/or decreased concentrations of
ocular VEGF and PEDF, respectively, is discussed in
terms of both development of a given disease and
effectiveness of a given therapeutic approach. |
