Objective: Authors
present their experience concerning scleral fixation
after cataract removal in children and young adults.
Material and methods: During 2000-2003 and the
1st quarter of 2004, 150 children were operated due to
cataract; in case of 10 patients at the age of 5-17
years posterior chamber IOL was implanted with scleral
fixation. Three children with Marfan’s syndrome were
operated on both eyes and during the procedure IOLs with
scleral fixation were inserted. In other three cases
children were previously operated due to the congenital
cataract and currently the reason for surgery was
secondary aphakia after the previous lensectomy. Four
out of 10 patients were operated due to posttraumatic
cataract with lens subluxation and during second
procedure IOLs were implanted with scleral fixation.
Results: The best functional results were
obtained in children with posttraumatic cataract and
children with lens subluxation in Marfan’s syndrome.
Conclusions: The best method to operate children
with selected cataract cases is IOL implantation with
scleral fixation. |
