| Summary: |
Purpose: To
evaluate whether primary posterior capsulorhexis allows
to preserve clear visual axis.
Patients and methods: 38 eyes of 26 children at
the age of 6-24 months after congenital cataract
extraction and intraocular lens implantation were
examined. Posterior capsulorhexis and anterior
vitrectomy was performed in 21 eyes (group I),
transparent posterior capsule was intact in 17 eyes (group
II). Mean age of children was similar in both groups
(16.1 and 15.5 months) p = 0.69. Transparency of visual
axis and necessity of second surgical intervention were
estimated. Mean follow-up time was 21.2 months in group
I and 42 months in group II.
Results: The fibrous tissue altered the
transparency of visual axis in 1 eye (4.8%) in group I.
Secondary cataract requiring reoperation was observed in
5 eyes (22.4%) of group II and this complication occured
not later than 2 years after first procedure. Posterior
capsule opacification not clinically significant was
observed in 3 eyes (14.3%) in group I and in 10 eyes
(58.8%) in the second one.
Conclusion: Posterior capsulorhexis performed in
small children prevents secondary cataract development
in majority of cases. |
