| Summary: |
Summary: The aim of
the study is to present Epi-LASIK technique (LASEK
modification), in which the epithelial flap is created
by a special microkeratome without using any alcohol.
Methods: Three myopic eyes of two patients were
operated with Epi-LASIK technique. The epithelial flap
was made with Epi-LASIK head of Lasitome microkeratome (Gebauer).
Suction ring 19/3 was used in two eyes and suction ring
20 in one eye. Nidek EC-5000 excimer laser was used. One
and three months after procedure the examination with
ConfoScan 3, Nidek Technologies was performed.
Results: Good, nasal-hinged epithelial flaps were
obtained with smooth surface of Bowman layer.
Intraoperative complications did not occure. Full
reepithelialization took two days in patient No. 1 and
four days in patient No. 2. Patient No. 1 complained of
mild discomfort and tearing during the first
poostoperative day, patient No. 2 – medium pain,
discomfort and tearing lasting for three days. Small
coma-shaped haze occured in both eyes of the patient
No. 2. Confoscan microscopy showed tiny deposites in the
anterior part of stroma of patient
No. 1 and small hyperreflective subepithelial scar
formation in both eyes of the patient No. 2.
Conclusions:
1. Epi-LASIK is a promising superficial, no alcohol,
refractive procedure.
2. Microkeratome Epi-Tome (Lasitome, Gebauer) seems to
be safe in creating epithelial flaps in Epi-LASIK
procedure.
3. Corneal changes found in eyes after Epi-LASIK in
confocal microscopy seem to be similar to those found in
eyes after LASEK.
4. Due to the fact that we have only three eyes included
in our preliminary report we cannot make our own general
conclusions. |
