| Summary: |
Aim of the study: To
evaluate the changes in the blood flow in the central
retinal artery in patients with exudative and
non-exudative age-related macular degeneration (AMD).
Material and methods: 51 patients, aged 64-91,
with both forms of age-related macular degeneration (33
women and 18 men) were examined. Patients were divided
into two groups: I – 7 persons (9 eyes) with exudative
AMD and group II- 44 persons (64 eyes) with
non-exudative AMD. In all cases the Power Color Doppler
flowmetry was conducted using 9 MHz Siemens Elegra. Peak
systolic (PS), End diastolic (ED) and resistance index
were measured. The obtained results were compared to the
control group of the same age and were statistically
analysed with U Mann-Withney test.
Results: Statistically significant differences in
peak systolic and end diastolic velocities were obtained
in central retinal artery in both AMD groups. Resistance
index was also statistically higher in comparison to the
control group.
Conclusions: 1. There is a distinct,
statistically confirmed correlation between degree of
changes of the retina and the decrease of the retinal
blood flow obtained in the central retinal artery. 2.
The perturbations in the blood flow may be crucial
factor in the pathogenesis of exudative and
non-exudative age-related macular degeneration. |
