Summary: Our article introduces an issue of fundus autofluorescence which originates at the level of the retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells and that is derived from lipofuscin accumulation. Autofluorescence imaging in confocal system is a new method of retinal pigment epithelium layer visualization and a useful tool in the diagnosis of different age-related retinal diseases: AMD, macular hole and reticular drusen.
This method gives a possibility for better understanding of pathogenetic mechanisms in various retinal diseases and is useful for monitoring the course of diseases. As a non-invasive technique in some cases it can replace or complement other diagnostic tools.

Key words: autofluorescence, confocal scanning laser ophthalmoscope, lipofuscin, age-related macular degeneration (AMD), idiopathic macular hole, reticular drusen.
