Summary: Changes that occur in the vitreous during ageing are reviewed in this article. The events that are responsible for ageing changes can be considered, according to Sebag, in three categories: rheologic, biochemical, structural. Liquefaction within the vitreous body along with the weakening of the vitreous cortex-internal limiting lamina adhesion leads to posterior vitreous detachment (PVD). As a result of anomalous posterior vitreous detachment vitreoschisis, retinal tears, and multiple floaters can occur. Patients with PVD symptoms should be given a careful retinal examination and be reexamined after few weeks.

Key words: vitreous body, ageing, posterior vitreous detachment, vitreoschisis, retinal detachment.
