Summary: Purpose: To estimate correlation between antioxidant system parameters concentrations in plasma in preterm infants and appearance of ROP.
Material and methods: We examined 12 preterm infants with the average birth weight of 1171g and gestational age of 29.1 wk. Total antioxidant status (TAS), reduced glutathione (GSH) and suproxide dismutase (SOD) were measured at day 1 (cord blood), 7 and 14 after birth. Premature infants had ROP screening. The control group included 12 infants born at term.
Results: 4 preterm infants had retinopathy of prematurity and higher levels of SOD, GSH and TAS than control group but these differences were no statistically significant.
There were no differences in concentrations of measured parameters between 8 infants without ROP and a control group.
Conclusions: In preterm infants who later suffered from ROP we observed higher antioxidant capability of plasma than control group and preterm infants without ROP.

Key words: retinopathy of prematurity, antioxidants, oxidative stress.
