| Summary: |
Purpose: Assessment
of the clinical efficacy of intubation of the
nasolacrimal duct in children previously uneffectively
treated with numerous (3) attempts of nasolacrimal duct
probing due to its congenital obstruction.
Materials and methods: Children who underwent
intubation of the nasolacrimal duct alone (19 patients)
or with subsequent dacryocystorhinostomy (1 patient) in
our department.
Results: In 19 patients stable improvement
defined by lack of epiphora and discharge was archived.
Out of this group, in 6 children clinical manifestations
of the improvement occured after intubation tube removal.
In 1 patient improvement was not achieved and patient
subsequently underwent dacryocystorhinostomy.
Conclusions: Clinical efficacy of numerous
probing of the nasolacrimal tract is inacceptably low.
Intubation of the nasolacrimal duct results in its
permanent patency and then – in significant improvement
of the patients quality of life. It prevents from
secondary obstruction and subsequently – from necessity
of next numerous attempts of the nasolacrimal duct
probing or from dacryocystorhinostomy. |
