| Summary: |
Vitreomacular Traction
Syndrome was first described by Jaffe in 1967. The
essence of it relies on partial vitreous detachment in
posterior pole coexisting with persistent adherence to
macular area which results in induced by anteroposterior
traction changes in neurosensorial macula, resulting in
vision acuity decrease. Although spontaneous traction
relieve may occur giving visual acuity improvement and
cystic changes absorption, it was observed that in most
cases the traction remains stable and delay leads to
irreversible changes in macula. The unique effective
treatment is surgical removal of changed vitreous or
pars plana vitrectomy. In case when VTS coexists with
epimacular membrane PPV and ERM peeling with ILM is
performed. Vitreous body surgery slowing down macular
tractions can significantly improve visual acuity.
Vision recovery depends on macular damage at the moment
of traction reduction. |
