| Summary: |
Phototherapy is new and
safe method of intraocular tumors treatment.
Photodynamic therapy with verteporfin (PDT) and
indocyanine green-mediated phothothrombosis (iMP) seem
to be effective therapies for optic disc capillary
haemangiomas and posterior pole choroidal haemangiomas
as well as in selected small and medium choroidal
melanomas. These methods are effective in reducing not
only the tumor mass but they may also stabilize or
improve vision. Comparing to other methods PDT and iMP
are characterized with a relative low risk of
complications which occur in 30 - 35% of cases. The most
common complications include: haemorrhages within the
tumor mass, subretinal and intravitreal haemorrhages,
overlying branch vascular occlusion, macular edema and
preretinal fibrosis with tractions formation. In some
cases of choroidal melanomas the phototherapy leads only
to the temporary tumor regression thus its effect is not
longstanding. However this phenomenon is not observed in
vascular intraocular tumors.
Based on the literature and our own experience we assume
that both PDT and iMP are safe and low risk methods of
some cases of intraocular tumors treatment. In majority
of cases they may lead to stabilization or tumor
thickness regression as well as they may preserve or
even improve vision in affected eye. |
