| Summary: |
The aim of this study was
clinical and histopathological evaluation of benign
tumors of the visual organ in 73 children treated in the
Department of Pediatric Ophthalmology Medical University
of Łódź between 1999 and 2005. The patients aged between
2 months and 16 years were divided into three age groups:
0-3 years, 4-8 years, 9-18 years. All children underwent
complete ophtalmological examination supplemented by
ultrasonography examination. In selected cases color
Doppler ultrasonography and computerized tomography were
implemented. The excised tumors underwent
histopathological evaluation.
In all cases, the neoplastic changes developed
unilaterally. In the examined age groups, benign tumors
occurred respectively in 32.9%, 27.4% and 39.7% of the
analyzed children. Before 4 years of age, the tumors
developed in the orbital cavity (77.8%) and corneal
limbus (50%). The tumors of lacrimal apparatus (100%),
bulbar conjunctiva (77.8%) and eyelid (71%) were mostly
observed in children of 3 and more years of age. The
changes were most often localized in the eyelid (42.5%)
and bulbar conjunctiva (24.7%).
Histopathological examination most often revealed
pigmented nevi (30.1%), dermoids (24.7%) and
haemangiomas (12.3%). The majority of the analyzed
tumors included pilomatricoma (8.2%), dermolipoma (8.2%)
and papilloma (6.9%). Pigmented nevi concerned mostly
bulbar conjunctiva (36.4%) and lacrimal system (27.3%).
Their development occurred mostly in children aged 3 and
more (95.5%). Dermoids were mainly localized in the
conjunctiva (44.4%), orbital cavity (22.2%) and corneal
limbus (22.2%). In the majority of cases (66.7%) those
lesions revealed within the first three years of life.
Capillary hemangiomas occurred in the first year of life
and concerned orbital cavity (55.6%) and lower eyelid
(44.4%).
There is a wide spectrum of benign tumors occurring in
the visual organ in the developmental age. The
histopathological profile of the tumors correlates with
the age and localization in the visual organ. |
