Summary: Diabetic maculopathy is a very common complication of diabetic retinopathy. It could be the first symptom of visual loss and in some cases it is also the first sign of diabetes at all. In type 1 diabetes mellitus, maculopathy is mostly associated with non-proliferative retinopathy (42%). But in type 2 diabetes mellitus maculopathy is the most common in proliferative retinopathy (56%). Macular edema caused by vascular leakage should be treated very quickly. The treatment of choice in diabetic macular oedema is laser treatment (grid photocoagulation). It preserves or improves vision in 50% of patients. But grid photocoagulation is not very effective method of treatment in case of diffuse diabetic macular oedema. We are looking for the alternative methods. One of them are intravitreal or subtenon injections of triamcinolone (triamcinolone acetonide). This article presents advantages and disadvantages of those methods.
