| Summary: |
Age-related macular
degeneration (AMD) is a disease characterized by the
presence of functional and morphological alterations in
the retina, Bruch’s membrane, retinal pigment epithelium,
choriocapillares and larger choroidal vessels in
addition to ocular perfusion changes. In patients with
early stage of AMD, with age-related maculopathy (ARM)
many various vascular alterations have been reported:
increased number of ischemic retinal capillaries and
obliteration of choriocapillares, delayed choroidal
vessels filling, choroidal blood flow reduction,
increase in pulsatility and decreased velocity of the
short posterior ciliary arteries and central retinal
artery. It is supposed that instead of primary RPE
dysfunction and genetic factors, alteration in choroidal
haemodynamics may play an important role in AMD
pathogenesis. The aim of this paper is to review the
current knowledge about the local circulatory
abnormalities in patients with AMD. |
