Summary: One of the goals of huge importance in retinology is looking for new procedures to treat Age-Related Macular Degeneration. While dry form of AMD is still almost untreatable, wet form can be successfully treated by repeated intravitreal injections of anti-VEGF agents. This kind of treatment is superior to previous methods such as laser photocoagulation, PDT or TTT, because it gives possibility not only to reduce visual impairment, but to improve visual acuity as well.
In the paper there is a short update on the role of VEGF in the development of wet AMD. Then the currently used anti-VEGF agents: pegaptanib sodium (Macugen®), ranibizumab (Lucentis®) and bevacizumab (Avastin®) are presented. The presentation focuses on their mechanism of action and on main results of clinical trials to show efficacy of such treatment.
Finally some general rules are given that should be taken into consideration in intravitreal injection procedures.
