| Summary: |
Aim: The aim of our
study was to evaluate visual acuity, visual field,
retinal bioelectrical function in patients with
subfoveal choroidal neovascularization treated with
intravitreal injection of triamcinolone acetonide (IVTA).
Patients and methods: Visual acuity (Snellen
chart), static perimetry (PS 30-2 W-W), M-fERG (according
to ISCEV standards) and fluorescein angiography were
performed before, 1 and 3 months after single
intravitreal injection of 25 mg triamcinolone acetonide
in 10 eyes of 10 patients (that did not meet the
criteria for PDT).
Results: There was no significant change in the
average visual acuity after 1 and 3 months after
treatment comparing to the initial examination, although
a slight improvement of 1-2 lines on Snellen chart was
noted in 3 cases. No changes were observed in static
perimetry results (MD, PSD, Foveal treshold) after
treatment in 3 months follow-up. There was a significant
decrease in both, response density (ring 5: 15.25±5.35;
11.75±5.09 and ring 6: 13.4±3.59; 10.23±4.9) and P1 wave
amplitude (ring 5: 0.486±0.17; 0.376±0.168, ring 6:
0.564±0.15; 0.427±0.2) in peripheral rings in MfERG.
Stabilization of CNV activity or scar formation was
noted in majority of eyes (68%) in fluorescein
angiography.
Conclusions: 1. Three months after intravitreal
injection of triamcinolone acetonide, no significant
improvement of visual functions was noted in the
observed group of patients with wet form of AMD. 2.
Decrease in leakage in FA and lack of significant
decrease in visual function may lead to conclusion that
IVTA treatment may slow down a natural course of the
disease. |
