| Summary: |
Age-related Macular
Degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of central
vision loss in elderly people in highly developed
countries.
There are several methods used in AMD treatment,
including: laser photocoagulation, pharmacological
methods, radiotherapy, photodynamic therapy and surgical
removal of subretinal neovascular membranes with macular
rotation. None of them is the optimal and it is seldom
possible to stop disease progression.
For patients with advanced AMD low vision devices
provide the only chance of functioning in the society.
Such devices like high plus-powered lenses and external
telescopes are often cosmetically and functionally
inadequate for patients with AMD.
The aim of this paper is to demonstrate the construction,
functioning and implantation of intraocular telescopic
lens based on information found in published articles.
Intraocular miniaturized telescopic lens could play a
major role in future visual rehabilitation in selected
AMD cases. |
