| Summary: |
The central retinal artery
is a direct branch of the ophthalmic artery, which
branches off from the internal carotid artery. It is the
main source of the retinal vascular system, which ends
with the internal capillary plexus in the internal
nuclear layer. The central retinal artery is
anatomically the terminal branch in this system, which
means that in the case of its occlusion there is no
possibility of creating the anastomoses necessary for
secondary circulation.
The aim of this article is to present the case of acute
ischemia of the posterior pole caused by occlusion of
the lower temporal branch of the central retinal artery
in a 50 yrs old woman.
As the result of non-surgical treatment functional
improvement was gained from counting fingers to 0.9. The
article presents images of fluorescein angiography from
the acute phase and post-treatment phase of the disease
as well as the results of visual field and contrast
examination. |
