| Summary: |
The aim of the study was
to estimate efficacy and safety of mitomycin C (MMC) use
in primary trabeculectomy in congenital glaucoma during
one year follow-up. 54 patients (87 eyes) were examined.
In group A, 22 patients (36 eyes) underwent surgery with
additional intraoperative MMC use. Group B consisted of
32 patients (51 eyes) operated without MMC. In group A
mean IOP reduction was 58.65% compared to 47.57% in
group B (p<0.001). Mean IOP was also lower in the group
A (16.31 mmHg to18.10 mmHg in grup B (p<0.05). The most
succesful surgeries were observed in patients with
infantile glaucoma (in group A 1.00; in group B 0.92).
Less effective were operations in congenital glaucoma
associated with systemic diseases (group A 0.89, group B
0.86). The least effective ones were observed in
patients with buphthalmus (0.53 in group A, 0.65 in
group B).
Primary trabeculectomy with MMC was a safe surgical
procedure for patients. Side effects occured very rarely.
The most common ones were hipotony and schallow anterior
chamber. After surgery with MMC statistically more often
avascular, cystic bleb was observed, but bleb-related
complications were not observed. |
