| Summary: |
Glaucoma is a
neurodegenerative disease with multifactorial
pathogenesis, which leads to progressive retinal
ganglion cells death. Current therapeutic strategies are
focused on the reduction of the elevated IOP.
Neuroprotection is a new destination in glaucoma therapy.
The aim of neuroprotection is to protect the RGCs from
early death due to endotoxins, exotoxins or ischaemia.
Neuroprotection works by preventing RGCs from dying and
keeping them in a functional state. The goal can be
achieved by enhancing survival-signaling pathways or
inhibiting death-signaling pathways. Recently dozens of
potentially neuroprotective agents have been recognized.
The aim of the paper is to discus the term of
neuroprotection in glaucoma, and currently most
promising agents and medications with potential
neuroprotective properties. |
