Simultaneous Keratoplasty and Cataract Surgery Performed in the
Department of Ophthalmology Medical University of Warsaw During
5 years

| Summary: |
Purpose:
Retrospective evaluation of indications, results of
treatment and possible complications in patients who had
undergone penetrating keratoplasty combined with
cataract surgery.
Material and Methods: The study was performed in
238 patients (239 eyes) including 98 men and 140 women
aged 11-87 years (mean 66.7) operated in the Department
of Ophthalmology Medical University in Warsaw in years
2000-2005. Patients were divided into two groups (according
to the procedure type): group I-188 patients (189 eyes)
– penetrating keratoplasty, cataract extraction and
implantation of posterior chamber intraocular lens,
group II – 50 patients (50 eyes) – penetrating
keratoplasty, anterior chamber intraocular lens removal
and implantation of posterior chamber intraocular lens
with transscleral fixation.
Follow-up period ranged from 5 years to 6 months.
Indications to the surgery were dystrophies and
degenerative diseases of cornea including Fuchs
endothelial dystrophy and bullous keratopathy,
postinflammatory conditions of cornea, posttraumatical
conditions.
Results: Visual acuity before and after operation,
final postoperative visual acuity, graft rejection and
necessity of other procedures in postoperative period
were analyzed.
Conclusions: Simultaneous keratoplasty and
cataract surgery is a difficult procedure. Improvement
of surgical techniques cause the late results more
satisfactory. The proper postoperative management plays
important role. |
