Pathogenetic and Clinical Aspects of the Vascular Glaucoma Theory

Summary: In a review the present pathogenetic concept of glaucomatous optic neuropathy and four elements of this process were presented: neural tissue loss, glia activation, tissue remodelling and change of blood flow were analyzed. Role of risk factors, especially vascular ones, disturbed autoregulation, mechanism of reperfusion injury and oxidative stress were emphasized. Finally, present and future therapeutic approaches, regarding vascular aspects of glaucoma pathogenesis were described.
