Summary: Purpose: Evaluation of the correlation between type A personality, which is a risk factor of cardiovascular diseases, and primary open angle glaucoma (POAG).
Material and Method: The study included 71 patients with POAG and 72 healthy individuals at the same age as glaucoma patients, which were a control group. The ophthalmologic examination was performed in all participants of this study. Personality type was measured using the Framingham Type A Scale.
Results: Type A personality was found in 45 % of patients with POAG and in 29 % in the control group. The average general result of the test estimating intensity of the type A personality was 0.597 in the group of patients with POAG and 0.494 in the control group (p<0.006). A high statistically significant difference between these groups was shown in the case of A_R factor (factor of rivalry). The average intensity value of A_R factor in groups was found to be as follows: 0.556 in the group of patients with POAG and 0.413 in the control group (p< 0.001). Age and gender of participants did not have any influence on type A test results.
Conclusion: The study shows significantly higher frequency of type A personality among patients with POAG, than among persons from the control group.
