Summary: Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and glaucoma are two leading causes of visual impairment affecting patients older than 50 years of age. Both are diseases of the elderly, and both prevalence increase with age. Patient with AMD may also have glaucoma. Diagnostics of glaucoma is very difficult in patients with macular degeneration. Perimetric testing is problematic for patients with AMD because of the central fixation loss. Optic disc examination may be difficult, because eyes with advanced AMD have structural alterations of the optic disc that resemble glaucomatous optic neuropathy. CD USG, GDx, HRT are not decisive.
