Summary: A recent advancement in non-penetrating glaucoma surgery is designed to improve the aqueous circulation through the trabecular outflow process. In our paper we focused on procedures known as minimally invasive glaucoma surgery including canaloplasty, ab interno trabeculectomy (with Trabectom system), ab interno excimer laser trabeculotomy (ELT), trabecular micro-bypass stent (iStent), Ex-PRESS mini glaucoma shunt and Gold Micro-Shunt implantation. Surgical techniques mentioned above are indicated in open-angle glaucoma, such as primary open-angle glaucoma, pseudoexfoliation glaucoma and pigmentary dispersion glaucoma, some of them also in chronic closure-angle glaucoma. All these procedures attempt to enhance aqueous outflow without creating a bleb. They can be performed alone or as combined surgery with any type of cataract extraction. Early multicenter studies and clinical trials have achieved promising results.
