| Summary: |
Behçet’s disease is a
multi-systemic disorder, frequent cause of uveitis in
Eastern world, rare in Poland. Systemic manifestations
of the disease consist of oral mucosa and genital ulcers,
erythema nodosum and thrombophlebitis, whereas ocular
involvement is mainly characterized by a recurrent
non-granulomatous anterior uveitis or iridocyclitis.
Cataract formation is the most frequent anterior segment
complication caused by uveitis and steroid therapy.
Phacoemulsification with intraocular lens implantation
is reported to be a safe procedure in patients with
Behcet’s disease, although there could be an ocular
inflammatory attack after the cataract surgery. The most
frequent postoperative complications are posterior
capsular opacification, posterior synechiae formation,
severe inflammation, cystoid macular oedema, epiretinal
membrane formation and optic atrophy. Appropriate
preoperative and postoperative suppression of
inflammatory reaction and correct timing of the surgery
are crucial points to reduce the postoperative
complications and to achieve better visual outcomes. |
