| Summary: |
Purpose: To
identify the frequency and risk factors of
endophthalmitis development in eyes with injuries caused
by foreign bodies.
Material and methods: This study analyzed 58
patients with penetrating eye injuries caused by foreign
bodies. Study group contained 57 men and 1 woman in the
age range from 18 to 70 years, who were treated in the
Department of Ophthalmology in Bialystok between 1997
and 2006. We selected 17 patients (subject group) with
endophthalmitis from that group. The remaining patients
were selected to form a control group. Cases were
examined according to the age, gender, time between
injury and surgical procedure, type, number and location
of foreign bodies, developing complications and type of
treatment. Statistical analysis was performed with Chi2
test.
Results: Occurrence of posttraumatic
endophthalmitis developing in 29.3% cases was associated
with foreign body removal later than 72 hours following
trauma and with the foreign body left in the orbit. In
neither group did we note statistically significant
differences in the cause for the trauma, or type, number
and location of foreign bodies. Patients with
endophthalmitis had 2.5 times more frequent loss of
vision.
Conclusions:
1. Penetrating eye injury caused by a foreign body is
the high risk factor for endophthalmitis development.
2. Time between injury and treatment is very significant
in endophthalmitis development.
3. Foreign body left in the orbit is the high risk
factor of endophthalmitis development.
4. Gender, age, reason of the trauma, type and location
of the foreign body do not influence endophthalmitis
development.
5. Patients with endophthalmitis have more frequent
vision loss. |
