| Summary: |
Analysis of patient cases
with histopathologically confirmed SCC of the
conjunctiva and evaluation of probable causes, clinical
picture, diagnostics and malignancy treatment methods.
Squamous cell carcinoma of the conjunctiva (SCCC) is
defined as a malignant epithelial neoplasm characterized
by basement membrane invasion. SCCC is a very rarely
occurring neoplasia but it is more common in equatorial
regions of the world. Environmental factors are
suspected to influence the SCCC occurrence, including:
ultraviolet radiation, human papilloma virus infection,
immunodeficiency and others.
The most often treatment is surgical excision with
limbal-conjunctival autograft transplantation with
adjuvant 95% alcohol epitheliectomy. Cryotherapy and
additional Ru-106 brachytherapy can be helpful. Adjuvant
0.02 % Mitomycin C (antymitotic factor) is also used in
some centers. The most recent studies focus on Retinoic
Acid and Interferon α as antyangiogenic and
anti-inflammatory factors. Usage of these two drugs is
still under clinical trials. |
