| Summary: |
Purpose: to analyse
the prevalence and severity of IFIS in a cataract
phacoemulsification surgery population.
Material and Methods: The examined group included
2705 consecutive patients (1614 women, 1091 men, who
underwent cataract phacoemulsification surgery in
Ophthalmology Department of State Hospital in Elbląg
over a 30-month period (11.2005-04.2008).
Results: In examined patients IFIS occurred in 45
men and in 19 women; a flaccid iris stroma after
cataract phacoemulsification surgery (1 point by Chang
and Campbell), was reported in 27 men and in 15 women, 3
men needed intracameral administration of adrenaline.
Floppy iris and a prolapse of iris stroma toward the
phacoemulsification and side-port incisions (2 points),
were reported in 13 men and 3 women. In 7 men
intraoperative corneal wound required suturing (corneo-scleral
suture) and in 1 man despite the intraoperative
intracameral adrenaline administration, occurred
accidental iris aspiration and loss of pigment cells
with aspirator ending( bimanual irigation-aspiration).
In 2 women intracameral adrenaline was administrated and
in 1 corneal interrupted suture was supplied. Full
manifestation of IFIS (3 points), was reported in 5 men
(in 3 cases required intraoperative intracameral
adrenaline administration and in 2 additionally
supplying of corneo-scleral interrupted sutures), and in
1 woman (did not require any extra intraoperative
manipulations).
Conclusions: In presented study IFIS features was
manifested in 2.37% of patients undergoing cataract
phacoemulsification surgery and related to 4.12% of men
and 1.18% of women. IFIS could be an important cause to
modify intraoperative procedures in cataract
phacoemulsification surgery. |
