Summary: Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a major cause of blindness in premature infants. There may be poor functional outcome after laser treatment because of the natural cause of the retinopathy of prematurity or other complications of the disease. Angle-closure glaucoma is a rare consequence of retinopathy of prematurity and can occur within first few years of life. It can develop as a result of severe retinopathy of prematurity stage, as a complication after laser photocoagulation, surgery procedures connected with ROP or cicatrical stage of retinopathy with the presence of retrolenticular masses.
Intraocular pressure may be occasionally also elevated after laser photocoagulation with no further glaucoma. There are many cases of acute angle-closure glaucoma in adults with the past history of laser treatment for retinopathy of prematurity.
Different mechanisms of glaucoma related to the retinopathy of prematurity are presented in this article.
