in the First Year of Life – Own Results

| Summary: |
Purpose: The
estimation of visual function, intraocular pressure and
anatomical condition of eyes after primary
trabeculectomy in children in the first year of life.
Patients and Methods: Twenty five eyes of 16
patients aged from 9 to 45 months (mean 27.0 ± 5,5)
after primary trabeculectomy were examined. The age of
children at the moment of surgery was from 1 week to 12
months, mean 5.5 (± 1.2) months. The mean follow-up was
19.8 (± 5.2) months. Following factors were evaluated:
BCVA, intraocular pressure (IOP), axial length of the
eyeball (AL), corneal diameter and transparency (CD),
refractive error (RE).
Results: At the follow-up BCVA for the distance
was 0.001 to 0.5, mean 0.06 (± 0.06). The values of IOP
before surgery was mean 39.9 mmHg (± 3.3) and end of
follow-up mean 15.6 mmHg (± 0.99). The mean axial length
of eyeball was 21.6 mm (± 0.65). The mean corneal
diameter was 12.6 (± 0.31) mm, in 7 eyes Haab’s striae
were observed. The mean refractive error was +0.59 Dsph
(± 1.79).
In 17 eyes fundus normal (68%), in 8 glaucomatous
neuropathy was observed (32%). In 3 eyes (12%) (2
children) no intraocular pressure normalization occurred
and repeated trabeculectomy was needed.
Conclusion: Primary trabeculectomy made in the
first 1 year of life was a safe and successful procedure
for primary congenital glaucoma. |
