Management and Evaluation of the Neuropathy Progression Risk in Patient with Diagnosed Malignant Glaucoma

Summary: The aim of the study was evaluation the therapeutic methods efficacy in patients with diagnosed malignant glaucoma treated in the Department of Ophthalmology Medical University of Warsaw.
Material and Methods: 14 patients (17 eyes) with diagnosed malignant glaucoma were included into the study and retrospectively analyzed. All patients were females.
Medical history and results of ophthalmologic examination including: VA, IOP, slit lamp examination (especially anterior chamber depth), gonioscopy and optic disc morphology were analyzed.
All patients underwent following intraocular procedures: trabeculectomy, cataract surgery (Phaco/ ECCE) or simultaneous cataract extraction and trabeculectomy. In 76.5% of cases before surgery refractive error- hypermetropia was present.
Results and Conclusions: Only in 12% of cases pharmacologic treatment using 3 and more medications was sufficient to control glaucoma progression. In the remaining group of patients another surgical/ laser procedure including ppVE, lens extraction, YAG capsulotomy/ hyaloidotomy, CFK and consecutive trabeculectomy should be performed.
