Summary: The term fungal keratitis refers to invasion of the cornea by yeasts, filamentous and dimorphic fungi. Fungi are opportunistic in the eye and cannot penetrate the intact corneal epithelium. They need a penetrating injury or a previous epithelial defect to enter the cornea. More than 70 different fungi have been implicated as causing fungal keratitis. Fungal keratitis remains a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge to ophthalmologist. Authors described the difficulties related to clinical diagnosis establishing, isolating the etiologic fungal and treating the keratitis effectively with antifungal agents. Patients who do not respond to medical treatment with topical and oral antifungal medications usually require surgical intervention, including corneal transplantation.
