| Summary: |
Purpose: The aim of
the study was to evaluate of the quality of life
patients after corneal transplantation and the
correlation of the quality of life with other factors
including age, visual acuity, preoperative diagnosis and
time from surgery.
Setting: Department Of Ophthalmology, Medical
University of Warsaw, Warsaw, Poland.
Methods: The questionnaires of 75 patients after
corneal transplantation were included into the analysis.
All corneal grafts were performed in Department of
Ophthalmology Medical University of Warsaw. The Visual
Functioning Questionnaire-25 (VFQ-25) modified by the
authors was used for the analysis of patients’
subjective feelings. The results of questionnaires were
combined with the data from the patients’ medical chart
for objective findings.
Results: Most of the patients (63%) recognized
their binocular vision at present at least as satisfying.
59% of patients declared that the corneal
transplantation fulfilled their expectations as
regarding to the quality of vision. Among the patients
whose expectations regarding to their post-surgical
vision were not fulfilled (19%) prevailed the patients
who evaluated their present vision as the same (57%) or
better (36%) comparing to the preoperative visual acuity.
Time from the surgery and surprisingly postoperative
visual acuity did not have the impact on the percentage
of satisfied patients. The majority of patients (78%)
didn’t find the postoperative regimen difficult to
follow.
Conclusions: Corneal transplantation improves the
ophthalmological status in both- the doctor’s and
patient’s opinion. Patients’ dissatisfaction seem to
result from their high expectations before surgery. |
