Aim: To evaluate
the short-term corneal changes after refractive surgery
using the white light scanning confocal microscopy.
Methods: 32 patients (64 eyes) aged 25-45 years (mean
28.7 years) who underwent refractive surgery in
Microsurgery Eye Center LASER were included to the study.
All patients underwent Epi-LASIK procedures to correct
the low to moderate myopia (-2.5-5.0 diopters). Patients
were divided into two groups: group 1 – eyes after
excimer laser procedure using MEL-70 (Zeiss) and group 2
– eyes after solid-state laser procedure using Pulzar Z1
(CustomVis). The patient’s corneas were evaluated using
white light scanning confocal microscopy (ConfoScan 3,
Nidek Technologies) 1 and 3 months after surgery.
Results: The small but significant changes in
corneal tissue like lack of subepithelial nerve fibers,
haze and ketatocytes activation in very anterior stroma,
were observed in both groups one month postoperatively.
In group 2 these findings were less marked. In group 1
the described changes diminished and in group 2
disappeared within three months after refractive surgery.
Conclusions: Procedure using solid-state laser
caused smaller and temporal changes in corneal tissue
compared to the excimer laser surgery. |
