| Summary: |
Presbyopia is a
physiological process of gradual loss of crystalline
lens elasticity which progresses with age and results in
a gradual loss of accommodation and far shift of the
near point.
As the mean lifespan of the contemporary humans
increases, presbyopia affects even more people. Until
recently, the only option available was correction with
reading glasses. At present there are many new methods
of treatment being dynamically developed. They are based
on optical media of the eye changed in such a way that
focusing the image from near on the retina is regained.
Therapeutic success depends largely on the appropriate
procedure choice. It is also important to discuss
possible benefits and disadvantages of the chosen method,
in order to avoid unrealistic expectations. It should be
remembered that none of the currently available
operating techniques makes it possible to restore
physiological accommodation, they only adjust the
optical system of the eye to see better from near
distance. |
