| Summary: |
Historically in wet AMD
treatment we usually used radiation therapy, laser
photocoagulation or surgical procedures. Now is the time
for pharmacological approaches such as photodynamic
therapy with Visudyne and anti-VEGF factors. Based on
knowledge that VEGF factors are responsible for CNV
development and progression and on the success of
anti-angiogenic therapies in the treatment of tumors
anti-VEGF A drugs are used as therapies for wet AMD.
Based on multi-centre randomized clinical studies, the
article presents current diagnostic and therapeutic
guidelines for wet AMD, indications and exclusion
criteria for laser therapy, photodynamic therapy,
pegaptanib sodium and ranibizumab therapy, reinjections
criteria and monitoring treatment effects. Intravitreal
ranibizumab injections have FDA and EMEA recommendations
for wet AMD treatment, because Lucentis is the first
drug for intraocular use, which offers patients with wet
AMD the opportunity to maintain and improve vision. |
