| Summary: |
Purpose: To
evaluate selected factors of coagulation and
fibrinolysis in patients with age-related macular
degeneration.
Material: 30 patients with age-related macular
degeneration. Patients with diseases and with other
factors which could have changed evaluated parameters
were excluded.
Method: In both groups blood samples were
obtained from cubital vein. Following blood parameters
were measured: platelet count, fibrinogen levels, von
Willebrand factor antigen (vWf: Ag) concentration,
antithrombin III (AT III) activity,
thrombin-antithrombin (TAT), plasmin-α2-antiplasmin
(PAP) complexes concentration, fibrin-fibrinogen
degradation products (D-dimers) values.
Results: Platelets count, vWf: Ag, TAT and PAP
concentrations were significantly higher in patients
with age-related macular degeneration as compared to the
control group (p<0.05). No differences between the two
groups were found regarding fibrinogen levels and AT III
activity.
Conclusion: The data obtained show that
age-related macular degeneration is associated with
elevated platelets counts, von Willebranda (vWf: Ag),
TAT and PAP concentration and (D-dimers) values thus
indicating an enhanced coagulation and fibrinolytic
activity in those patients. |
