| Summary: |
Broadly defined, macular
edema is an abnormal thickening of the macula associated
with the accumulation of fluid excess in the
extracellular space of the neurosensory retina. Cystoid
macular edema (CMO) is an important cause of reduced
vision in many pathologic conditions such as
inflammatory disorders, retinal vascular disease,
diabetic retinopathy, retinal venous occlusion, macular
telangiectasis, retinitis pigmentosa, intraocular
surgery and others. Various treatment options are
suggested, including topical corticosteroids, topical
non-steroidal anti inflammatory drugs, systemic and
topical carbonic anhydrase inhibitors, laser
photocoagulation, vitrectomy and intravitreal drug
injections. This paper reviews the use of different
modern techniques in the macular edema management. |
