| Summary: |
The results of recent
research reports have revealed that uncontrolled
complement system (CS) activation plays an important
role in the pathogenesis and progression of age-related
macular degeneration (AMD). More precise knowledge
achieved in the field of AMD pathophysiology triggered
novel therapeutics development – complement system
inhibitors. In the present work, the latest discoveries
concerning the role of CS in AMD pathogenesis as well as
the first experimental and clinical trials with new
inhibitors have been presented and discussed. |
