| Summary: |
Low visual acuity and
blindness in children is a great problem all over the
world. By WHO criteria there are 1.5 million blind
children worldwide. Five percent of worldwide blind
individuals are children younger than 15 years of age.
In developing countries 50% of that population is in
this age group. There are marked differences in the
causes of pediatric blindness in different world regions,
apparently based on socioeconomic factors that limit
prevention and treatment schemes. This work presents
most common causes of visual acuity loss including
blindness in children in our country. Leading causes of
childhood blindness are: optic nerve atrophy, cortical
blindness, retinopathy of prematurity and its’
complications, cataract, glaucoma, uveitis,
developmental disorders of eyes, refraction errors,
intraocular tumors. |
