The Causes of Vision Loss in Children

Summary: Low visual acuity and blindness in children is a great problem all over the world. By WHO criteria there are 1.5 million blind children worldwide. Five percent of worldwide blind individuals are children younger than 15 years of age. In developing countries 50% of that population is in this age group. There are marked differences in the causes of pediatric blindness in different world regions, apparently based on socioeconomic factors that limit prevention and treatment schemes. This work presents most common causes of visual acuity loss including blindness in children in our country. Leading causes of childhood blindness are: optic nerve atrophy, cortical blindness, retinopathy of prematurity and its’ complications, cataract, glaucoma, uveitis, developmental disorders of eyes, refraction errors, intraocular tumors.
