| Summary: |
The aim of this article is
to present the history of vital dyes use during
vitreoretinal surgery (chromovitrectomy), starting form
the first indocyanine green use to the current
state-of-the-art of indications, application techniques
and toxic effects of different agents.
Vital dyes have become very popular to visualize
transparent structures such as the internal limiting
membrane during macular hole surgery, epiretinal
membranes and the vitreous in proliferative
vitreoretinopathy and retinal detachment.
In chromovitrectomy the best agents for internal
limiting membrane staining are indocyanine green,
infracyanine green and brilliant blue G, for epiretinal
membrane identification – tryptan blue and for vitreous
identification – triamcinolone acetonide.
The safety profiles for the different dyes in
chromovitrectomy hasn’t been established yet, so they
should be applied in a concentration, volume and time of
application as low as possible. |
