Summary: Introduction: In the recent years, a fast development of surgical techniques in cataract surgery is observed and it caused corneal incision size reduction and microincision cataract surgery introduction.
Purpose: To evaluate early uncorrected visual acuity after 1.8 mm coaxial microincision cataract surgery with foldable intraocular lens implantation.
Materials and Methods: The examined group consisted of 46 patients (46 eyes) operated using coaxial 1.8 mm microincision cataract surgery, with foldable intraocular lens implantation Akreos®MI60 (Bausch & Lomb). The reference group consisted of 59 patients (59 eyes) operated using standard 2.75 mm small incision phacoemulsification, with foldable intraocular lens implantation AcrySof® (Alcon).
Te following parameters were evaluated on the 1st day and 1 month postoperatively: uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA), intraocular pressure, anterior and posterior segment of the eye.
Results: Postoperatively, we found an increase of UCVA in both groups. On the first day after surgery UCVA in the examined group ranged from 0.4 to 1.0 (mean 0.90 ± 0.15), and in the reference group it ranged from 0.1 to 1.0 (mean 0.83 ± 0.23). There difference between the groups was significant.
In the final postoperative examination there was no significant difference in mean UCVA between the groups.
Conclusions: Coaxial microincision cataract surgery is equally safe as standard phacoemulsification and enables to achieve very good early functional results. Coaxial microincision cataract surgery allows to achieve better uncorrected visual acuity in the immediate postoperative period, thus shortening visual rehabilitation.
