Analysis of the Nutritional Guidelines Compliance in Individuals with Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD)

Summary: Purpose: The aim of the study was analysis of the nutritional guidelines compliance in the group of individuals with age-related macular degeneration and control group.
Materials and Methods: The object of conducted analysis were 127 nutrition questionnaires obtained from 64 individuals with AMD (44 females, 20 males) and 63 without AMD – control group (49 females, 14 males). The participants age ranged from 50 to 88 years. The nutrition questionnaire concerned: AMD and its course, concurrent illnesses and nutritional guidelines compliance. Nutritional guidelines compliance was assessed based on the practical nutritional guidelines for adults in Poland. Participants were asked to determine the extent of guidelines compliance using the frequency scale: “always - often - seldom - never”.
Results: The recommendation, that was the most often followed, was the guideline for consumption of varied animal- and plant-derived food – declared to be always followed by 94.5% of analyzed individuals. The majority of analyzed guidelines were characterized by similar frequency of following in the AMD and control group. The group of AMD patients declared more frequent following guideline of everyday cereals, vegetables and fruits consumption (p = 0.031; answer „always” was chosen by 78.1% and 58.7%, respectively). Similar situation was in case of guideline of moderate meat consumption and replacing it in everyday diet by fish and leguminous (p = 0.001; answer „often” was chosen by 54.7% and 25.4%, respectively).
Conclusions: The group of AMD patients, in comparison with control group, declared more frequent guideline compliance of everyday cereals, vegetables and fruits consumption, as well as guideline of moderate meat consumption and replacing it in everyday diet by fish and leguminous. The fact, that AMD patients more often followed mentioned recommendations, may result from their knowledge about importance of diet in AMD progression.
