| Summary: |
Purpose: To
investigate the expression of intercellulare adhesion
molecule (ICAM-1) by conjunctival epithelial cells of
patients with cystic fibrosis.
Material and Methods: 15 patients with cystic
fibrosis and 15 control subjects were included in this
study. Impression cytology specimens were collected and
analyzed by flow cytometry and analyzed by flow
cytometry.
Results: A significant increase of ICAM-1
expression by epithelial cells was found in patients
with cystic fibrosis compared with normal eyes.
Conclusions: Increase of ICAM-1 expression by
epithelial cells in cystic fibrosis patients suggests,
that the inflammation appears to have a role in the
pathogenesis of the ocular surface changes and may be a
marker of the inflammatory status in cystic fibrosis. |
