| Summary: |
Dry eye syndrome is a
disease that involves the eye surface and result from
abnormal tear quality or quantity. Dry eye syndrome
characterised by tear deficiency is very common ocular
disease among adult population. There is little
information about its prevalence in children and
adolescence. The condition may appear in some inborn
anomalies of lacrimal gland in children,
endocrinological diseases such as diabetes or thyroid
gland dysfunction. Contraceptive pill users may suffer
from eye surface disorder, in young girls too. Children
with hematopoetic system diseases treated with bone
marrow transplantation do suffer from many ocular
complications among which dry eye syndrome is quite
frequent ocular finding. Keratokonjunctivitis sicca is
not uncommon in children with juvenile rheumatoid
arthritis. However, it seems that keratoconjunctivitis
sicca is still an underestimated condition in this age
group. The relation between viral keratitis and dry eye
is not uncommon among young patients. Contact lenses
wearers often present with eye surface discomfort. The
paper presents current opinions on pathogenesis,
clinical picture, diagnostics and prevalence of dry eye
syndrome in children and adolescence. |
