| Summary: |
Purpose: Evaluation
of all three layers of the tear film in postmenopausal
women and comparison with the tear film in women
receiving hormonal replacement therapy (HRT). This study
allows to estimate an influence of synthetic estrogens
on each of three layers of tear film.
Material and methods: The study was conducted in
66 postmenopausal women. All patients were divided into
two groups: group I – women without HRT (34 persons),
and group II – women receiving HRT since at least one
year continuously (32 persons). There were not qualified
women with any other factors which might disturb tear
film. Each of three layers of the tear film was examined.
To evaluate aqueous layer the Schirmer I test was
performed, for lipid layer- Non Invasive Break up Time (NIBUT)
measured with Tearscope, and Ferning test to evaluate a
mucous layer.
Results: Disturbances of each tear film layer
were noted in both examined groups. The changes were
more intensive in group I (without HRT). The results of
Schirmer test were incorrect in 57.4% in group I, and in
25% in group II. The results of NIBUT were incorrect in
50% in group I and in 37.5% in group II. Fern test was
incorrect in 45.6% in group I and in 23.4% in group II.
The comparative analysis of both examined groups shows
positive influence of HRT on all three layers of tear
film. The statistically substantial difference was noted
for results of Schirmer and Ferning tests.
Conclusions: Hormonal homeostasis changes have
negative influence on all three layers of tear film in
postmenopausal women. HRT treatment has beneficial
influence also on all three layers of tear film. Our
results suggest that HRT can be suitable for the
treatment of postmenopausal dry eye syndrome. |
